International 10-20 System Resources & Training Center
Supporting accurate, reproducible EEG electrode placement through practical tools, educational resources, and training programs.
The International 10-20 System provides the geometric framework used to record and interpret EEG activity. Consistent measurement helps reduce placement variability, improve reproducibility, support reliable serial comparisons, and preserve the integrity of the recorded data.
Why Accurate Electrode Placement Matters

The International 10-20 System establishes a reproducible geometric framework that relates scalp electrode locations to underlying cortical regions. Accurate EEG electrode placement supports localization, asymmetry assessment, serial comparisons, and consistent interpretation across studies. When electrodes are misplaced, the resulting error may be invisible to the interpreting physician while still affecting the spatial integrity of the recording and the clinical value of the data.

Accurate identification of the nasion, inion, and preauricular points forms the foundation of reproducible International 10-20 System measurement. Consistent landmark identification is essential for accurate EEG electrode placement and reliable recordings.
The resources below include downloadable reference materials, competency assessment tools, detailed instructions for use, and educational training opportunities designed to help technologists implement accurate measurement efficiently in real-world clinical environments.

ACNS Guidelines for Clinical EEG
American Clinical Neurophysiology Society Guideline 1: Minimum Technical Requirements for Performing Clinical Electroencephalography
This foundational guideline outlines the minimum technical standards recommended for performing routine clinical EEG studies, including electrode application, recording standards, calibration, and technical quality considerations. It is widely referenced throughout the neurodiagnostic field as a benchmark for EEG quality and consistency.
Ideal for Building a Quality-Focused EEG Program:
- Developing laboratory policies and technical standards
- Supporting compliance with ACNS guidelines
- Improving consistency and reproducibility in EEG recordings
- Training and validating EEG technologist competency
- Workshop and continuing education participation
